“suspension was foolish on road bikes”

Sure, only won three consecutive P-Rs, after all.

Mapei’s kit: How could something so hideous be so beautiful?

pompier has it right on the doping ATMHO.

Awesome – dopage or no dopage.
Wasn’t ‘96 also the year that everyone figured out that suspension was foolish on road bikes, or was that the year Johan’s dual suspension Bianchi shat the bed?

    Mmmmmm science.

I think mapei was a powerhouse built for the classics, like postal was for the tour. As for the doping, I think that all the teams were doing it no matter how much they were tested or how clean they said they were.

Is this finish the “Perfect Storm” or the fruit of well organized spring campaign? For some reason the image of three team members finishing together will always bring up the suspicion of doping for me. Please except my apologies for even bringing up the subject. I didn’t follow the 93rd edition closely and I don’t know the drama that led up to this complete domination of the finish. How is it that these three riders found the strength not to crack? Was it as simple as they had lady luck and the mental toughness to concur the cobbles? The drama of bike racing lives in those cobbles. I was secretly hoping for a puncture in the last section to give hope to the chase group which contained yet another Mapei rider. I honor Museeuw’s win (even though he punctured with 8km to go), he was the face of the team and held the sponsors greatest hope at glory.
