Having watched the hardest men finish in the Velodrome shattered, I have come to see what not winning this one race does to a man. It’s a crucible, to harden and temper the great ones, and to break the ones that are found lacking. A broken cleat, slipped cable, a steerer tube failure, means not coming into the Velodrome for that final lap of victory. It’s either the total glory of finishing first, or the complete loss of not winning. There is no “personal best” in L’Enfer du Nord. This is the race where having guts, skill and luck to cross the line with arms raised, to receive the most prized of all rocks, a cobble from Hell, rewards a rider with reknown for all time. We will honor and remember you, Franco.

Great tribute to a legendary rider and human. I’ll never forget his goodbye to racing, and there couldn’t be a better way to say farewell, than finish your career by finishing Roubaix.
